Deb,

Do you send a 1098-T if the application fee is the only charge for that year? Most of our students pay the app fee the fall before they come. I agree with you that the fee is required and could therefore be eligible but it seems like it would create too many problems. If the student ends up not enrolling are they still able to deduct it? If they take the deduction it would count as a year for their hope credit wouldn't it?

  Since they are required, we consider them to be qualified education expenses.

  Are application fees allowable charges?

  Hopefully someone knows the answer to this question, or can direct me to the answer to this question.

  If a student is charged an application fee in 2007 for a Fall 2008 start;

  and is not enrolled at least 1/2 time in any semester during the tax year 2007;

  am I required to send them a 1098-T?

  We report "Amounts Billed" .... we have sent 1098-T's in the past to this group of "potential/probable" students .... the difference this year is we are changing our ERP system, the "Student" portion will not be fully LIVE until Fall 2008 and gathering the data will be challenging.

  Thanks in advance!
