Employees of The Catholic University of America do not receive discounted
tuition rates, but do receive discounts on mandatory fees (new student fee
and required student fee charged every term). They are also not charged the
student activity fee.

Subject: bursar-l: Tuition Discount

Hello All:

Are any schools offering tuition discounts for employees? I don't mean
discounts offered through HR/Benefits office where an employee presents an
approved form as payment to Bursar but a discount where rates are
permanently different for an employee vs. a non-employee. I am trying to
research or determine if that would circumvent the TAX code regarding fringe
benefit taxation. If it was a permanent (published) rate, would that
discounted rate amount not be a fringe benefit? Some colleges offer
discounted tuition rates to certain groups; whether it's military personnel,
state resident vs. non-state resident, unique academic program, that kind of
discount. Possibly eliminate the benefit of tuition exemption offered
through the HR/Benefits office for a more lucrative discount directly
through the college. So, can any of you non-practicing lawyers answer this
one?

The issue our administrator's organization wishes resolve is to find an
alternate way to maximize employee education by reducing the rapacious
liability of graduate tuition a employee experiences if their studies cost
exceeds $5,250 in a tax year.

I included my local congressional representatives; maybe their office could
provide an answer.

I would appreciate any information you could share. Thank you.
