Tufts University still collects SSNs for Aid and IRS reporting purposes but assigns each student an ID number. SSNs would not display on ID cards or magnetic strips, etc.

Subject: bursar-l: Use of SSNs
Friends:
Something has come up in a privacy protection bill in the House that would prohibit governmental entities, including public colleges and universities, from displaying social security numbers on student identification cards or tags. The bill also would prohibit the SSN from being included on the magnetic strip or bar code of the ID card or tag. We've been asked to help quantify the cost of compliance, but don't know if any schools currently use SSNs in this way. Does yours? Thanks for any help. Anne
