At Wheaton College, MA we used to collect a housing deposit but got
rid of it a few years ago. It became more of a burden on our side
than any type of security that a student was returning. There were
always special cases and waivers, etc, etc. Not having it has made
life much easier for everyone involved and hasn't affected the
housing lottery. Student life was OK with getting rid of it, so its
a thing of the past for us.
