We don't drop classes very often for our traditional students. We try
to screen pretty hard before we let them register. However, there are
always those unusual circumstances where someone is in classes and
suddenly it looks like financing slipped badly.
In those few cases, we will write the threatening notice that they will
be removed from classes and residences in 10 days if financing isn't
forthcoming. We've carried through with that maybe twice in the last
two years. Most of the time they get something going. It is very
difficult to really move someone out of campus once they start classes.
And our thinking is that it's usually financially beneficial to pursue
collections and assume partial to full recovery than to back off all the
charges if we kick someone out of school.
Part-time students are a different matter. It's so much easier to
delete them from classes, and the dollar amount is so much less that we
tend to do that a little more frequently, if only to get the student's
attention. However, the same analysis applies. If it looks like the
student can get their act together with financial aid, or partial
payments, it seems to make sense to let them stay versus losing all the
revenue from backing off the course.
Hope that helps.
