529 Plan

Hello Bursar people!
 
This semester we had a student withdraw from the University due to an
unforeseen illness. Her tuition was paid for with funds from a 529
Tuition Plan. After the refund calculation was completed, there is a
credit balance on her student account. The father is concerned about
having to pay a penalty on these dollars if we issue a refund check to his
daughter.
 
If anyone has experienced a similar situation regarding a withdrawal and the
refunding of 529 Plan dollars, can you share with me how you handled it?
