RE: Financially responsible party

Regina,

Since the government sees these kids as adults, so do we. We are also a
private school. We instruct parents that our agreement is with their child.
If the parent agrees to pay the tuition, that is an agreement between them
and their child. If the account is not paid and goes to collections, it is
in the child's name. We do not send statements to the parents, we send them
in the name of the student. The student has to sign a Billing Information
Form that outlines our payment policy and is an agreement to pay. The parent
does not sign anything unless they are applying for a PLUS loan and then
they would be signing that application form. We will not discuss the
account with the parent unless the student has given us express permission
to do so in writing. If the student requests that the bills are sent to the
parents address rather than their local address, they must fill out a
request and we enter that as a separate AR address. We have had problems if
we format an AR name with our refund check printing hierarchy - the parents
name will print on the student's check - so we do not do that anymore.

I hope this helps you in your investigation,

Anita

Subject: Financially responsible party

We are a private institution and currently require a parent or guardian to
complete a form accepting financial responsibility for their student. The
bills are then sent to the billing (responsible) party. We do not allow
students to sign unless they are officially independent of their parents.
What are other schools doing?

1. Are you a private or state school?

2. Do you require a parent or guardian to accept financial responsibility?

3. Do you send bills to the parent or to the student?

Thanks for your input.
