Subject: Re: Anonomous Payments
Jeanne,
We would and have accepted such payments. I don't think we have an obligation to tell the student who made a payment and if we faced such an issue (student demanding to know who paid), I suppose I would give the money back to the anonymous person. I would first tell the student "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth."
The only trouble we have faced with this scenario is when the anonymous person also wants gift credit for the payment, which, of course we do not provide,as it is not a charitable gift.

This question has come up recently and I need to know if anyone out there has encountered this situation. If a 3rd party contacts you and wishes to make an anonomous payment towards a student's balance, would you agree to this? Not certain if there are legal issues here or if it is possible to not divulge to the student the source of the payment.
I am really interested in hearing from anyone who is familiar with this issue.
