You may only use box 1 or box 2. Never both for either Banner or the IRS.
Simplifies it somewhat!

Subject: 2002 1098T Rule for BOX1 - TSATAXR
We have decided to report figures for BOXES 1, 2, and 4.
Setting up the rules for BOXES 2 & 4 in TSATAXR is fairly simple, but I
need help with BOX 1.
As billed items, all the figures for BOX 2 reside in the 'charge'
column. They are easily extracted by selecting the 'total charges' radio
button after specifying the category codes and excluding any non-applicable
detail codes.
As scholarships and grants, all the figures for BOX 4 reside in the
'payment' column. They are easily extracted by selecting the 'not a
charge' radio button after specifying the category codes and excluding any
non-applicable detail codes.
As paid tuition and fees, the 'total paid charges' radio button should
apply to BOX 1 . Banner documentation explains this button as a 'deduction
of outstanding balance from original amount due.' When testing this
function on an account with a zero balance, it returns no data. According
to the documentation this makes sense. However, it does not help in
reporting the payments that led to the zero balance.
Am I missing something? Has anyone out there got a grasp on this
functionality? I would appreciate any insight!
