Amy,
I always give a receipt to students paying cash, (unless it is .10 cents
and they say they don't want one of course). But a lot of the time I ask
if they need one. If they don't need or want one that is fine.
It does take more time and a lot more paper to print receipts, and my
printer is not right by me, so I have to hop up and go get it each time.
It's a good way to get my exercise!
