Happy 4th of July all!
Based on the responses received, it appears that most schools issue
bookstore vouchers or "loans" to only students with confirmed excess
financial aid. Schools no longer charge books to student accounts unless
the bookstore is tied in to the billing area via software.
My question is how do you inform the students of the ability to get a
bookstore voucher or loan based on their excess confirmed aid? Is it a
carte blanche statement published in your catalog, a letter to all students
or on a case by case basis?
Our financial aid office has been telling students who ask that they can
charge their books to their accounts (vouchers) if they have excess
confirmed financial aid. We are sending out to all students a letter with
their estimated bill for the fall semester (pre-bill) and would like to
communicate this to our students that this on a case-by-case basis pending
approval. We're recommending that no vouchers be issued until after
add/drop due to multiple schedule changes. Our logic is that all books are
available in our library for student use and besides professors change
required books to recommended.
Does anyone have a sample authorization form they would be willing to share?
Also who signs the form authorizing the use of excess financial aid for
books? If it is not someone from the Financial Aid Office, why not? What
happens if the credit is from a parent PLUS loan? Do you have the parent
sign the form also?
Thanks again for all your help.
