The number of checks they can bounce before cutoff depends on a few
things. Was the check theirs, did they pay us off quickly, is their
account balance zero or $8000? Usually they get cutoff after the first
one, with allowances made for the above reasons to let them continue
after that.
We've never prosecuted, but once or twice I've written the very official
letter that we were ready to. My impression, in Massachusettes, is that
prosecution is allowed if the parent or student got something specific
for the check, like a transcript, diploma, pre-registration.
