At Winthrop University, we are on SIS-PLUS. Financial aid is shown on
the student's account as "estimated financial aid". The balance due is
the difference between the student charges and estimated financial aid.
We send out statements about 4 weeks before student fees are due, so if
the aid on the statement is not what the student expected, we get a
call. If the aid is in process, we ask the student to check their
account via the Web for an updated balance due - once they see their
estimated aid has been posted to their account, they can remit the "new"
balance due in full or participate in our payment plan (our payment plan
is four monthly payments of 25% each with the first payment due in
August).
In the event aid is not finalized by the payment deadline, we ask the
students to go on the payment plan until their aid is finalized. Of
course, we grant extensions in hardship cases.
The students know it is important to have their accounts cleared by the
deadline since we cancel schedules for non-payment.

Subject: FW: Tuition late fees
I would be interested in knowing how the two schools that answered below
handle pending aid situations? Here at L-R, we have a lot of trouble
getting an exact balance due one month prior to classes beginning.
There
are always cases of students who have not been awarded yet, or parents
who
have applied for loans, but have not been approved yet.
What do you do about the students who walk in on the first day of class
and
register and apply for aid at once? Do you require that they pay in
full or
you drop them or are they given some type of grace period for F/A to be
awarded?
I would like to go to a flat late payment fee or drop from classes, but
the
way our system is set up, I don't see how that's possible.
Any input??

Barnard College charges a $75 late payment fee. Payment is due
approximately one month before the term begins.
