Hi Peter,
At Xavier we launched our web processes last year. We developed a site
called Student Online Services. At this site, students can access the
detail of their account and make a payment. They need some private data to
make their initial sign-in and then they set up their password for future
use. If students want to give their parents their password, then parents
will have the same access. Otherwise no account access for parents. We
did set up a second avenue to make web payments for parents, or anyone
else, if they know the student's social security number. We are finding
our graduate students use this feature because they don't want to fool with
the data needed to set up a password. When someone makes a payment through
the second avenue, they get a confirmation with a receipt number that they
can print off. They do not get a confirmation of the student's name. This
second avenue gives parents a route to make payments without violating any
FERPA policies. We have had very little complaints with this process. I
like that it puts the responsibility of parental access in the student's
