Federal Work Study Checks

Happy Friday to everyone!

The Student Financial Assistance (SFA) Handbook, Volume 6, Chapter 4, page
6-30, provides provisions to apply a federal work study (FWS) payment
directly to a student's account. There are references to the Code of
Federal Regulations (CFR) within that page. The following is the web site
where this information can be reviewed.

Basically, a school is allowed to obtain a written authorization from a
student to apply the FWS check directly to the student's account to cover
current charges for tuition, fees, room, & board. This has to be a
separate authorization and you cannot require the student to sign up for
this. We use an authorization form (see Word file attached) to have the
student sign if they want. We have set up our payroll system so that the %
of the check that the student wants to go to their student account is
treated as a deduction. If the student wants 100% of their check to go to
their student account, then they get a pay stub, but no check. We have used
this since the 1999-2000 school year and it has worked great. I hope this
information is helpful.
