Subject: Student Work Study/Employment
We have a recent issue that begs me to ask the following questions of other
institutions.
1. Do you subtract the student's "work study award" from the balance due at
the beginning of each term/semester? i.e. are they not expected to pay this
amount until the end of the term or as they earn the funds?
No -- work study students are treated as any other student working on
campus;
we allow them to pick up their paycheck without regard to any outstanding
balance
due; conversely, we do not give them "advance" credit towards their bill.
2. If you subtract this amount from the balance owed, can you provide some
explanation of your policy? i.e. is it applicable to all students who earn
work study, whether need based or non-need based (if applicable)? how is
any remaining balance handled? are students required to apply their work
study earnings directly to their account?
Not applicable
3. If you do NOT subtract this from the balance owed, do you assess finance
charges on this amount as the student works to earn the amount of the award?
Winthrop offers a monthly payment plan to all students. Work study students
can participate in the plan - many due in fact use their earnings to pay
their account balances. All students are assessed a late fee if their
payment
is not received by the due date.
