We do not reduce the balance due by the work-study amount. The full tuition
and fees per semester, less scholarships, grants and loans, is due at the
beginning of each semester. Our thoughts are that scholarships, grants and
loans apply directly to the account, so the student needs to come up with
the rest prior to the start of the semester. Work-Study is paid directly to
the student, not the account, and is contingent on the student actually
working, therefore we can not count on it as payment. If the student needs
a payment plan, we have a company that we contract with, Tuition Management
Systems, and they can forward their work-study checks to TMS, if they can
not clear the balance in full at the beginning of each semester.

Subject: Student Work Study/Employment
We have a recent issue that begs me to ask the following questions of other
institutions.
1. Do you subtract the student's "work study award" from the balance
due at the beginning of each term/semester? i.e. are they not expected to
pay this amount until the end of the term or as they earn the funds?
2. If you subtract this amount from the balance owed, can you provide
some explanation of your policy? i.e. is it applicable to all students who
earn work study, whether need based or non-need based (if applicable)? how
is any remaining balance handled? are students required to apply their work
study earnings directly to their account?
3. If you do NOT subtract this from the balance owed, do you assess
finance charges on this amount as the student works to earn the amount of
the award?
Thanks!
