For several years Arkansas State University has relied on profits
generated by other auxiliaries and subsidies from educational and
general funds to offset continuing operating deficits in our athletic
program. We currently transfer the maximum subsidy from educational
and general funds allowed under Arkansas law. We anticipate that the
athletic deficit will continue into the foreseeable future and that
profits from the other auxiliaries will be increasingly needed for
re-investment. To insure a continued level of support from the other
auxiliaries we are considering budgeting an athletic transfer as a
line item within each auxiliary.
Are there institutions that include such an athletic transfer in
their auxiliary budgets? We would appreciate learning of this or any
other innovations schools may have developed for dealing with
continuing athletic deficits and their effect on auxiliary fund
balances.
