When we migrated to Banner 2000 in 1999, we no longer used the social
security number as the unique identifier. However, our old system did,
along with a 5-digit student ID number. We brought that information over,
and can call up records with the social security number. It immediately
switches to the student ID number, though. We have been encouraging the use
of the the ID numbers by the students and families. When the students
register via the web, they must use the student ID, not their social
security. In light of the recent security issues with internet servers and
browsers, it's probably a good idea to avoid the SS number.
