bursar-l: Health insurance targeted messages to the students reminding them to waive

From: Akin, Toni <takin_at_hebrewcollege.edu>
Date: Wed, 23 Sep 2009 11:12:25 -0400

Hello Fellow Bursars:

It is that time of year to follow up before the deadline on students who
failed to waive the health insurance. I would like to send a targeted
messages to the students reminding them to waive. Does anyone have a
template I can build upon for this? Since we are in Massachusetts, do I
need to remind the students about the regulations as well?

Any feedback would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Toni

For the most part we don't have panic buttons. There are a few offices
around campus that do. Those that don't have code words to signal
others to call police. For example, Mary Lamb..."would you pull the
Mary Lamb file for me?" "I have Mary Lamb on the phone would you take
it please"...my cashier office is behind secure doors and walls. They
do have buttons and we have cameras. In my opinion, unless staff are
alone with no one around it's more effective for others to use 911 so
they can give descriptions and information to responding police. Panic
buttons simply make staff "feel" safe...a false sense of security.
Often they are hit on accident and create false alarms which can result
in the "cry wolf" situation with police.

All,
We're about to start to a G/L restructuring project with the help of our
Datatel associates. I thought it worth our while to pose a few questions
to you on your ledger successes and frustrations. We currently have a
12-digit system, organized by Fund-Department-Object Code. These
questions recently came up in our committee meeting, please provide any
input you can.
Do we incorporate alpha-numeric g/l numbers into our structure?
How should we set up the hierarchy of department sequencing, revenue
accounts, expense accounts?
Do we go to 14-digit account numbers?
Do we alter student types and account receivable codes as well?

Johnson County Community College does provide panic buttons in the
Business Office and a few other areas that deal directly with students.
These buttons tie into our police department on campus.

Yes at Frederick Community College we have panic buttons at all windows
of the Cashiers office which immediately alerts the local police. We
have also recently installed them throughout areas of the college that
could potentially be exposed to problems.
Luckily, we haven't had to use them, but they give employees some
reassurance.

I do have a panic button but I have yet to use it. During a recent

Hello all,
Do any institutions out there provide "panic buttons" for high risk
areas across campus. Example: All areas that handle cash, areas that
could have angry students or angry employees.

Thanks for your response.

Hi. At Bloomfield College we have them in the Bursar's Office, one at
the Bursar's desk and under the cashier counter and in a few other
offices on campus. They are directly tied into the town Police
Department as well as campus security. Lucky for me the Police
Headquarters is a block away.

Johnson County Community College does provide panic buttons in the
Business Office and a few other areas that deal directly with students.
These buttons tie into our police department on campus.

Some of our offices that serve students installed these last year; the
buttons when depressed send an automated voice message to our security
team that they need to respond to (X) location; so far we have not had
to use them in our office, knock on wood...the installation helped to
allay some safety concerns once our security office moved to a different
building.

University of Washington does have panic buttons in the main cashier's
area. We also have cameras throughout the Customer Service area-
which cover the cashier's area, the vault, and other specific high
traffic/risk areas.
In addition, we use NetVu for our security cameras, which allow us to
view from our desks, what the cameras are recording. This is very nice
for safety, and the additional benefit is that we can see when the
cashiers need assistance during the busy times.
