We currently have a 19 digit account number. Re-structuring has been
mentioned here but nothing further has happened at this time. We'd be
interested in what others have to say about pros/cons and g/l layout.

We've used Datatel since FY06, frequently do queries and also use FRX.
Our GL structure is Fund-Function-Location-Department-Object
(XX-XX-XX-XXXXXXX-XXXXXX). We've been able to account for everything
possible, however, the 19 digits appears to be more than we need at
times. Having the function separate from the department has both
advantages and disadvantages although it could be combined within the
object. It appears there is some duplication within our structure,
however, it allows for easy breakdown multiple ways for reporting needs.

Please post to the list serve, I'd be interested in finding out what you
resolve to do and best of luck!

Subject: bursar-l: General Ledger Account Structure Suggestions

All,

We're about to start to a G/L restructuring project with the help of our
Datatel associates. I thought it worth our while to pose a few questions
to you on your ledger successes and frustrations. We currently have a
12-digit system, organized by Fund-Department-Object Code. These
questions recently came up in our committee meeting, please provide any
input you can.

Do we incorporate alpha-numeric g/l numbers into our structure?

How should we set up the hierarchy of department sequencing, revenue
accounts, expense accounts?

Do we go to 14-digit account numbers?

Do we alter student types and account receivable codes as well?
