This depends on the source of the money. Any uncashed Title IV refund
has to be either paid to the original lender to reduce the student's
debt or credited to the fund as per the Student Aid Handbook. Any other
unpaid refunds generally have to be paid to the state after a period of
time (5 years in Maryland) and are held in trust by the state
unless/until claimed by the student.

Subject: bursar-l: Process for old refunds/missing address
Does anyone have a process for what to do with old refunds where you owe
a student but do not have an address (have tried google, etc.). Do you
have a certain amount where you write them off? How many years do you
keep them on the student's record?
Thanks!
