I know this may not be too much help for the 1098Ts issued for tax year 2008
but the PDG Bursar's Conference in Austin on April 19-22 has at least one
session on 1098Ts. Go to:

Cal U has rolling registration. Our 1098T's are produced based on the
calendar year the charge was posted to the student' account and we don't
report payments - only scholarships and grants.

So if a student registers for a summer 2008 class in December, 2007, if the
charge is not posted to the account until May, 2008, that is the year used
for reporting for 1098T purposes. Nothing would be reported in 2007 because
there was no charge on the student's account even though the student was
registered.

We control when semester charges are posted to a student's account and we
post charges within 60 days of the starting date. Hope this helps.

Question(s) to those schools who have rolling registrations:

1. Your school permits registrations to occur in the prior calendar
year and accept payment. Example: student registers and pays in December
2007 for a course that begins May 2008. When do you produce a 1098 for that
student, 2007 or 2008?

2. Same student as above but pays in April, 2008. When do you produce
a 1098, 2007 or 2008?

Any input/insight would be appreciated.
